Farley Matchett was arrested and convicted in 1991 for the stabbing death of
Uries Anderson from Houston, TX.
Harris
County is the county in Texas that Farley was tried and sentenced in.
Statistics show that Harris Co. leads the USA in the number of cases
tried and sent to death row as well as the number of men that are
actually executed. There was a murder the day before, however
Farley Matchett was named as a suspect but was never charged.
Farley
like most death row inmates in this country did not receive a fair trial
or a full review as entitled under the constitution of the US. The
constitution says that a defendant has a right to effective assistance
of counsel and trial and direct appeal, however in the post conviction
process a person is entitled to counsel, but they do not have to be
effective.
The
fact the murder may have been in self-defense which is the same as being
factually innocent is only one of the many claims that have gone
unaddressed, therefore due to issues not being raised at a proper time
they were barred from being heard. The need for an attorney is to try to
resurrect these viable claims and get them back into State Court where
they can be properly addressed.
