America needs to have a bold energy plan that puts America first by
reducing our dependence on foreign oil and creating good clean energy
jobs--not a weak energy bill that caters to oil and gas companies. The
House energy bill does nothing to end our dependence on foreign oil, in
fact encourages it. Even President Bush shunned the House bill for its
massive giveaways to big oil. "I will tell you with $55 oil we don't
need incentives to oil and gas companies to explore," Bush said in a
speech to newspaper editors in Washington. "There are plenty of
incentives. What we need is to put a strategy in place that will help
this country over time become less dependent." While President Bush
delivers these inspiring speeches, he often undercuts existing efforts
to reduce dependence on foreign oil. Recently, President Bush
threatened to veto the Energy bill if it contained goal-oriented
provisions to reduce dependence on foreign oil. Click here to discover the truth behind
President Bush's misleading speeches...
The House version of the energy bill gives away
billions to the big oil industry and invests very little in renewable
energy. Though the Senate bill is clearly better than the house bill,
it fails to adopt forward-looking amendments like Senator Maria
Cantwell's amendment to reduce dependence on foreign oil by 40 percent
in 20 years. America needs a better solution. Nothing less than a bold
program to achieve energy independence will do.
What You Can Do To Help
Help us create a movement for energy independence
and good jobs! Two years ago, political leaders and strange bedfellows
came together to create the Apollo Alliance and called for a moon
mission--a crash effort to build a clean energy economy and create good
jobs here at home and reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Join our
coalition of Governors, labor unions, national security experts,
environmentalists, business and community leaders from across the

Highlights from the 2005 Take Back America
Conference
A few weeks ago, thousands of patriotic Americans
gathered in Washington DC to discuss our progressive movement's vision
for a stronger America, and to outline the concrete steps we can take
together to build it. The crowd was electric, the speeches were
inspirational, and many - like us - left with a renewed sense of the
power we have collectively to transform our country.
President Cecil Roberts Delivers
an Inspiring Vision of Our Clean Energy Future
|

Watch his Speech... |
Cecil Roberts, President of
the United Mine Workers of America spoke of reinvesting in America by
creating good jobs in the clean energy industries of the future. He
recalled traveling through the heart of Appalachia- parts of West
Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio-where labor leaders, civil rights
activists, and political representatives spoke to thousands of citizens
looking for solutions to America's pressing problems. |
Under the current Administration, Ohio, Pennsylvania
and West Virginia have lost a combined total of 334,000 manufacturing
jobs. President Roberts said that it's time to reinvest in good jobs
for American workers and he called on our government to be
bold and invest in new technology that creates jobs and rebuilds
communities.
Apollo Alliance Founding Executive Director
Honored at the Take Back America Conference
 |
Bracken Hendricks, Founding
Executive Director of the Apollo Alliance received a special service
award for his commitment to progressive policies and his inspiring
vision for an energy independent America. |
Bracken is currently transitioning from the
executive director role to become an active and influential member of
the Apollo Alliance Steering Committee. This new assignment will allow
Bracken to remain involved in the growth and direction of this
important project, while creating space for him to build on the example
of Apollo as a strategic initiative, and more directly engage in the
broader policy and political work of framing a national progressive
message.
During this transition Jeff Rickert
will assume leadership as Acting Executive Director. Jeff has run
Apollo's research and regional organizing for the past year and a half
as Field Director, and has a deep history within the labor movement.
Jeff will also head the search process for a permanent Executive
Director.

and emotionally spoke of the environmental justice movement and the
devastating impacts of pollution on people of color. Carla Din, Apollo's Western States
Director, talked of Apollo's impressive successes in cities and states
across the nation. Steve Sleigh, Director of Strategic
Resources for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace
Workers spoke of the millions of jobs that could be created from a
clean energy economy as Rob Sargent, Senior Energy Policy
Analyst for the National Association of State PIRGs & affiliated
organizations called on all of us to use currently available clean
energy technologies.

Conservation Voters honored Carla Din, Apollo
Alliance's Western States Director and Environmental Liaison for the
United Steel Workers of America during their 23rd Annual Environmental

|
At the end of Take Back America 2005, Bill
Moyers reminded us that "what matters isn't what is
said in Washington, but what you do across the country to carry on this
movement for social and economic justice." With that
conviction, the Apollo Alliance is moving forward, reaching out and
building on the energy of the conference to create a brighter future
for us all.
