Wolves are native to Oregon, but these days they are hard to find in the Beaver State. In fact, just 3 reported wolf sightings have been confirmed in Oregon since 1999.

But that hasn’t stopped Oregon officials from seeking federal permission to kill endangered wolves. They’re asking for the okay to kill wolves that kill livestock even though Oregon has a state wolf plan that provides plenty of other conflict-resolution tools to use without having to resort to killing endangered  Urge federal officials to reject the state’s request for permission to kill endangered wolves. 

Oregon has requested a “recovery permit” that would allow state and federal wildlife agents to kill endangered wolves. But recovery permits are intended for scientific research and species conservation, such as captive breeding, to increase the populations of animals in danger of extinction.

In fact, just two weeks ago, a federal court examining how the permit was being used in other states rejected the argument that endangered wolves must be killed in order to be saved.

Tell the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to resolve or prevent wolf-livestock conflicts in Oregon with legal methods, not an illegal permit to kill imperiled wolves. 

We don’t have much time. Comments on the proposal are due to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on or before September 11th, so please take action today.

Wolves are a vital part of the American West. I hope you will help ensure their recovery in Oregon and beyond.
